When designing power supplies and converters, a high switching frequency is greatly appreciated. The most important reason for this is to be able to reduce the passive components (inductors and capacitors). One of the problems that become more important at higher switching frequencies is the fact that semiconductor components are higher stressed electrically. Higher frequencies imply that the conductors of the circuit start behaving as transmission lines, and that voltage and current waves are going to reflect at points in the circuit where the wave impedance changes. In practice, these reflections occur at the semiconductor components. These can thus be subjected to the double voltage and that doesn’t benefit the life expectancy of the component. Another problem of these transmission line effects is that the voltage and current waveforms show the phenomenon of ringing, which partly causes electromagnetic radiation.
